Why are there crews on motorway embankments removing plants with yellow flowers?

This plant is likely to be Ragwort and it is highly poisonous. Eating it can cause liver damage, jaundice, nervous disorder, blindness. It can kill cattle and horses but sheep are more tolerant of it. So, the plant has to be up-rooted by law and safely disposed of. If humans, particularly children, touch the plant and then put fingers in mouth it can cause discomfort.

Landowners are supposed to kill ragwort
Reply:Removal of Ragwort is a law that dates from 1959 listed as the Weeds Act 1959 - there was a review in May 2007 and that could explain why you have seen them.

It is deadly to horses and cattle and all landowners must remove them from fields.
