Planting Flowers on top of septic lid.?

I have a 6x4 septic lid that is flush with the ground I am planning to plant flowers on top of. I plan on covering the lid with soil and planting herbaceous flowers on top, since nothing else is safe to plat near a septic. If this works, how thick should I make the soil and will the flowers be able to survive? I figure annuals may, but will it be enough for perennials?
Say
FlowersBirthday FlowersSympathy FlowersDepending on the flowers, you should be fine with 4-6" of soil- just as if you are planting in a pot or planter box.

Downside: hope you don't have to access the septic!
Reply:My wife did a raised bed on our lid and mid summer Murphy's Law struck and it needed cleaning. The guy from the septic company was great. Instead of tearing up the garden looking for the access cover he lifted the entire lid, garden and all. I built it with 2X10's and 8 inches of soil was plenty for the annuals she planted. We never tried perennials but the annuals got a great start every year because of the heat generated in the tank.. RScott
Reply:I have 4-6" of soil on top of my septic tank cover with some 'weedy' perennials planted. I don't mind digging up the plants when the septic tank needs to be pumped.

It is not a big job to remove that little soil. I do have to water extra well there when there is a drought.
Reply:Are you sure you want to do that? Your septic system will need cleaned out periodically. Burrying the access cover to it could either mean a lot of work for you digging it out or a lot of added expense when it needs cleaned out. Your tank should be cleaned every 3 to 5 years. Check out this link for more information about septic tanks:

Can I plant flowers where I had previously planted flowers?

I planted flowers last year and they bloomed early in Feb. It was unseasonably warm here. Then a late frost came and they died. They never came back. They are supposed to be annual flowers, but I am afraid I will not have flowers again next summer. Can I plant more/different flowers in the same place?
Say
FlowersBirthday FlowersSympathy FlowersAnnuals only last on season anyway, so they wouldn't come back. Since the frost caused them to die and not some sort of disease, there is not reason not to re-plant in the same area. If you want your plants to last year after year, plant perennials.
Reply:Of course you can. Mix in some new soil, or compost, turning the soil to break down any clumps, and plant for whatever the location (sun or shade).
Reply:Yes, I do every year!
Reply:No, they may pop up next summer, so wait %26amp; see. :)
Reply:Yes.
Reply:Yes you may plant over expired plants, perennials plants are the ones that come back. Annuals die each year, although they may re-seed.
Reply:You can plant more flowers. Work in some organic compost to make up for depleted nutrients %26amp; to improve drainage. Add mulch to conserve moisture %26amp; to decrease weeding.

If you give you new plants lots of TLC, they'll thrive.

Good luck! Enjoy exploring all the possibilities having this opportunity brings ;)
Reply:Yes, but take up the old ones. If they were annuals, that means they only bloom once in the year. What you want are perennials. Another thing to look at is what are the native flowers to your region, these are ones that will do well. Check with your neighbors and see what they grow or ask your local nursery what is recommended.
Reply:it's obvious that those flowers that bloomked in feb loves winter and don't like summer so i suggest that plant different that likes all weather condition
Reply:Yes, you can replant every year if you wish.

Vegetables have to be moved around and not planted in the same spot from year to year.

Here are some hints to help you in your gardening:

Mix in slow-released (time-released) fertilizer such as Osmocote into the soil. Read the container and make sure you get the all purpose type:

http://www.osmocote.com/index.cfm/event/...

There are other good brands too.

Water well.

Plant your flowers.

Water well.

If you have it, spread mulch around your flowers to help hold

in moisture, keep weeds from growing, keep your soil in place and healthy. You won't have to water so often:

http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-mulch.ht...

My husband and I keep our dead dry leaves from Fall in a trash bag and stomp up and down on it or crush them with our hands. The smaller the better. That is all we use for our mulch. You can also buy a hand held leaf vacuum that breaks the leaves down for you. This will help keep your yard clean and pretty.

Starting the second month after you plant your flowers, you can use liquid fertilizer from once per week to 14 days, or even once per month. ONLY if you wish.

Do not fertilize once the temps climb into the 90's.

Don't fertilize after August 15th. Your perennial flowers need to get ready for their winter sleep in order for them to return the next year.

You can keep your annuals going with fertilizer after August 15th if you wish as you will need to replant them the next year (some annuals re-seed themselves, but I don't depend on this).

Watering is very important to the health of your flower gardens. Each morning, stick your fingers down into the soil a couple or three inches deep. If it feels dry, water.

As the flowers fad, cut them off. This will keep the blooms going. This is called deadheading (You will need to stop deadheading after August 15 on your perennials so they can make seed and then go to sleep in the Fall.)

Happy gardening to you.genealogy mormon

Should I remove the flowers from my potato plants?

no the flowers let you know potatoes nearly ready. when they die off completely your spuds are ready to harvest, though some gardeners I know would say leave them a few weeks longer if you want bigger spuds. enjoy eating them
Say
FlowersBirthday FlowersSympathy FlowersAbsolutly not you will starve the bees and you will get no tatties.
Reply:no way leave them alone,

gizmo your nuts,lol.
Reply:I do not think it really matters, so you should not do extra work.
Reply:Just leave the plants to grow and when the top growth dies off then it's time top dig up the potatoes.

Wanting to start planting flowers...?

I would like to start planting flowers because I absolutely LOVE them. The only problem is that I know almost nothing about planting flowers. I can very easily find out how to plant flowers (how far in the ground/ how far apart) so I don't really need that kind of advice. I just don't know what kind of flowers to plant!

I'm a highschool student so I don't have that much time or money to spend on flowers but I do have sufficient time and money to spend on them. I live in Kansas so I have average weather... decent snow in the winter, and jacket worthy springs and falls. When should I buy and plant the flowers? Also, what are good flowers to buy following the previous criteria? I live in an open fenced neighborhood so I can't have flowers that spread extremely easily but I'd prefer to have ones that return each year (are those called perennials?). Last question: where to buy them? All help is appreciated. Thank you!
Say
FlowersBirthday FlowersSympathy FlowersSince you are new to gardening then you should start off with flowers that are guaranteed to grow. I would choose flowers like:

Annuals (must replant every year): buy as seed and sow in ground after all danger of last Spring frost. Some time in April for you or purchase from garden center.

Zinnia

Delphinium

Marigold

Portulaca

Geranium

Petunias

Impatiens and Begonias for shady areas

Perennials (return every season): start seed inside 12 weeks before last frost or purchase from a garden center. You can sow perennial seed directly in the ground, but they may not flower the first year.

Bee Balm

Coreopsis

Lambs ears

Chamomile

Roses (mature plant from garden center)

Phlox

Perennial Hibiscus

There really is quite a bit to choose from. Just make sure that if you choose several to go in one location that they all have the same light and moisture requirements. I started with roses because I found them easier to keep alive, but with a little experience you will be on your way to full fledged gardening.

Good Luck
Reply:I live in Kansas too...now is not the right time to plant flowers. You have to wait till it stops freezing...it also depends on the flowers. March - April is the best time to plant most flowers.

Where to buy...that depends on where in Kansas you live. Always buy from a plant nursery " no Home Depot, Lowes etc..." I normally buy from Family Tree Nursery " which is located in the kansas city metro area. "

Planting plants and caring for them is hard work...even with the lowest maintenance plants.

I need more information on the soil, the location of your home " north, south etc.. " and where the flowers are to be planted at around the home.
Reply:I would go to the garden shops at home improvement stores.

You can also register at homedepot.com. They have an area for gardening that gives great tips on what types of flowers to plant, when to plant them, how to start from seed, fertilizer, and soil types.
Reply:I'll tell you one thet you can start growing indoors right now that smell wonderful and you can use it for cooking and eating it, it's called sweet basil try it you wont be disappointed!!!

very fragrant you can get it(seeds) at hardware stores K-mart etc...acting resources

Why do the flowers on my tomato plants keep falling off?? The plant looks great, but there are no tomatoes!?

First, it isn't blossom end rot like one observer answered. That is caused by extended dry spell followed by extended wet spell. It's when the blossom end of the fruit rots.

In your case, blossom drop is caused when day temperatures exceed 27 celcius for more than a few hours. this happens to other plants from the nightshade or solanacae family like peppers, tomatoes, and potatoes. To combat the problem, try heavy mulch to keep root zone cool and moist. Tomatoes do not need water every day unless they are in pots. They require a good deep watering (about one inch) once per week. the mulch will reduce evaporation.

And above all else, never use Miracle Grow. Chemical fertilizers like MG are synthesized from petroleum...that's right...crude oil.

Better to use natural fertilizers like worm castings, homemade compost, kelp powder, and some crushed egg shells. An application of epsom salts helps too. Dissolve one tbsp to a gallon of water and feed plants.

Good luck.

Reply:Tomato plants like all others need to cross breed in other wards you need two plants but if you have two plants then too much water just water every other day or two to three days. The best time to water is early morning before the sun comes out or later in the evening when not so hot so water will soak in. Also I use mircle grow for tomatoes once a month. I just picked 6 big tomatoes and some cherry tomatoes today.
Reply:Are they getting enough water; they need water every day.The flowers are what turn into the tomatoes. Are you sure rabbits or squirrels aren*t chewing off the flowers.?
Reply:if you useed the dirt of ur own house, then that might be the problem.or alse u dont know how to plant a plant.lol nah.just kidding.well if i were you i would by another type of dirt.i thik they sell them at WAL MART.
Reply:If this is an indoor plant or greenhouse plant then they are not getting pollinated. Tomatoes will easily self-pollinate without the need for bees but they need some "action" in order to self pollinate. This can be accomplished by shaking the plant or simply blowing on the flower clusters. If your plant is outdoors then pollination is not an issue. The usual cause is inadequate sunlight. I have heard that too much nitrogen fertilizer will cause this as well, but I don't believe it. I have heard that excessive heat will cause this, but I have only seen this occur if the plant is showing wilting in the heat of the day, meaning inadequate digging of the garden when you started off this spring. If this is the problem then suspending a screen of slats over the plants so that they only receive 50% of the sunlight during the noon hours may help, and then remember to dig your garden twice as deep next spring.
Reply:They are getting to much water.
Reply:Your blossoms falling off is blossom end rot which is caused by to much watering. When watering your plants try to get under the leaves and just water the base of the plant. Potash is also a good additive to help. Walmart carries a product called blossom set that is a spray that you can use on the tomato blossoms. It works very well and will help speed up your tomato production.

Good luck.performing arts

Do tomatilla plants have male and female flowers on the same plant?

TOMATILLO (LLO FROM THE LATIN O) botanically known as Physalis ixocarpa. better known as a bushy, sprawling tomato relative. from Mexico. to answer your question... drum roll please.... "A" sexual! neather male or female, they pollinate them self.

Will spraying a Weed Herbicide on Flowers and garden kill my plants?

I bought this product called Weed-Out which claims will kill all kinds of broadleaf weeds such as dandelions from my lawn. I just attach it to my hose and spray away. Can someone tell me, i have a garden next to my lawn and so when i spray this weed herbicide will it kill my flowers and bushels too if i spray the liquid on them too? The grass seems fine so i am guessing this weed herbicide is selective in killing just the weeds?
Say
FlowersBirthday FlowersSympathy FlowersHerbicides are designed to kill weeds and unwanted plants.

They are either selective, non selective or broad spectrum. A broad leaf herbicide is a selective herbicide that WILL harm flowers, vegetables and plants. It is designed to NOT harm grass. You are correct ...it is selective in killing the broad leaf weeds, which would include most flowers and plants. When in doubt read the label.
Reply:I certainly would be concerned that it would. I have many small violets and another small flowering ground plant that I had bought years ago and with all this years rain and a new irrigation system they have spread all over the lawn. I am planning on putting down a weed and feed to get rid of them. I unlike you, am hoping it works. Talk to someone at a local nursery and good luck.
Reply:The answer is yes. It will kill your garden plants. They are broadleaf plants.
Reply:it depends on the type and brand of hebicide you have, there are different herbisides that are flower safeaffiliate

Have you seen this animation: a little girl on top of some buildings, planting flowers?

I can't seem to find it anymore, it was an animation with a girl planting flowers and other plants on buildings. And there's a nice song on the background.

The buildings aren't real it's a model town, so the girl is actually very small.

If you find something like this please post a link
Say
FlowersBirthday FlowersSympathy FlowersI believe the anime is Sgt. Frog(Keroro Gunsō,Keroro Sergeant) and you're probably are talking about Dororo's Flowers but Dororo is a male. From your descripition, this the only anime I can think of.

In order to gain Dororo as a full ally, Keroro has to come up with a plan that will please the nature-loving Keronian, and does just that with Kururu's help--genetically altered seeds that bloom into shuriken-shaped flowers shortly after planting. The mission to plant these flowers--a joint effort of most Keronians and major human characters--is initially successful, but Tokyo government employees are forced to clean them up. Paul uses the Nishisazawa Group's funds to buy all the flowers and send them to a deserted island where they can continue to flourish...however, Kururu's twisted nature seeps in as the flowers continue to grow to thrashing vine monsters (much to Natsumi's personal dismay, as one left remaining in Tokyo sprouts up and grabs her, flinging her around in the air).super nanny

I really like Companion Gardening. Does anyone know what plants go well together? Flowers & Veg?

For example Carrots and Tomatoes grow well together and benefit each other.

Many Thanks for Your Insight!!
Say
FlowersBirthday FlowersSympathy FlowersI seem to run into you a lot. Nice to recognize someone here.

A good rule of thumb is if they taste good together, grow them together. Like tomatoes and basil with oregano. Plant beans under corn-pole beans-theyll climb the corn. Plant squash under the beans. The indians called this the 3 sisters it works so well.

Check out any books by Rodales Organic Gardening. They will tell you everything you need to know

What should I do with my cyclamen plants now that the flowers are dying?

Please advice what I should do with my cyclamen bulbs
Say
FlowersBirthday FlowersSympathy FlowersWell, you can always throw them out.

But if that's not an option... and they are in pots....

1. Fertilize monthly with a balanced fertilizer (20-20-20) at half strength until April. Cut down the flower stalks, but do not cut down the leaves until they all die down on their own.

2. During the summer months, cyclamen go into dormancy. You need to water very little (like once every 2 weeks or less) and do not fertilize. Put them where rain water will not fall on them at all.

3. new shoots should start appearing in the fall. You can repot at this time (if necessary) and start watering regularly and fertilize monthly again. They will bloom in later winter or early spring again.Shoes

Reply:I have to agree with the poster below...the green zinnia (envy) is one of the most beautiful green flowers ever...the seeds are hard to come by in the store, you have to watch for them or order them. They sell out quickly...same with Belles of Ireland, which we cut and dry every year and harvest seeds. Green flowering plants are a rarity in the garden..these things add real interest! People always comment! The green zinnia is shocking.
Reply:Belles of Ireland--REALLY beautiful! Tall and stately

Coneflower--They have a new variety that is green

Zinnia, Envy--a BEAUTIFUL green shade

I have planted all of these and had great luck with them...I planted them with black and ivory flowers and it was beautiful

*edit* I almost forgot that I planted the newer Hydrangea, Limelight which has an extremely long lime green stage--then the tips become pink edged. Limelight holds the solid green stage more than any of the hydrangeas and and has massive blossoms on it.. I was very pleased with this new variety!
Reply:Cockleshells and mums, for starters :)
Reply:Peegee hydrangeas are quite green when they bloom in large clusters and then mature into a dusky cream with a reddish edge. They are perennials which is nice because they come back every year. I just prune mine to keep their bushy growth.

Reply:NO plant has green flowers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is like the myth that the red part of the Poinsettia is the blossom, but it is not, the yellow part is the flower of the Poinsettia!

There are some orchids that truly have green blossoms, but from past documentation, orchids are not "plants", however, current information from wikipedia claims orchids are plants while admitting that they depend on fungi to exist for their nutrients. I still think of orchids as not being plants.

There are some flowers that initially have a green tint at the base of the flowers which is not technically the flower blossom, and it occurs when they initially open, but as photosynthesis is not conducted in the blossom itself, there are no flowers with green coloration. Only a few kinds of the orchid have any green coloration at all, but it is not due to photosynthesis.puppy teeth
