What are the best flowers and bulbs to plant for the UK winter?

I'm looking to plant some outdoors flowers for winter. Don't want anything too big or shrub like, just a few small potted plants/flowers that will thrive in the cold. Any ideas as to where I could start? Am looking for preferably English plants/flowers please.

Reply:I'm not sure how cold it gets there, but you might look into chrysanthemums and pansies.
Reply:all bulbs need to be planted now but wont pop up until the spring winter pansies are cheap and add lots of colour
Reply:All kinds of hellebores flower in winter, about Feb if you're lucky, and the foliage is nice in winter. Winter flowering heathers are reliable if you have a really sunny spot. Cyclamen are starting now and will go on for ages if you deadhead them. Also try a winter flowering honeysuckle, I know you said no shrubs but you can keep it in the pot and they are really cheap, you can throw it away when it gets too big, and the early bumblebees will love it.
