You have to dig up the grass the area of the flower bed you want to plant. Always clear more than you think you will need. Once you have no grass, chop (till) the ground. I add a small bag of compost or a small bag of general potting soil and mix it, loosening the dirt really well. Then plant in the design you want, with the base of the stem even with the ground. Pat the dirt around the roots to eliminate air bubbles. Plant taller plants to the back of the flower bed, smaller ones in front. Add a lot of mulch, and water thoroughly. I use Eucalyptus mulch, but cyprus or pine mulch is ok. Water every day THOROUGHLY. If you get rain, you can skip a watering. Sit back and wait. Good luck!! Once you do your first flower bed, you feel so accomplished you will want to flower bed your whole yard!!! I have a bed of blue plumbagos, and one with white and hot pink vincas, along with a butterfly bush and some gerbera daisies. Around my big backyard tree, we fixed a flower bed, planted boston fern and impatiens. I also have some Johnny Jump Up seeds that are just coming up. I am in zone 9, southeast Louisiana.
Reply:dig the soil mix it with manure, plant flowers, and water
Reply:is it a small space or large ? buy some lupin seeds and nastirum seeds they are so easy and cover ugly spaces and just keep going all summer collect there seeds at end of year its easy seeds are large and then save and you have them for next year . also try to but perennials they come back year after year and are easier
Reply:Get a shovel

Dig hole twice the size of flower base

Set flower in

Fill with dirt you took out

Pat down

Little water if rain not expected.
Reply:First, dont go out buying flowers until the weather is warmer. Lots of money wasted on plants that dont make it in the cold nights. Plant about the last week of May. Get Annuals to start your first run trials of planting.

1. Spade up the earth.

2. scatter about 1 cup of 10-10-10 fertilizer to the 5x5 ft area

3 Rake it level

4. Put in the plants with a trowel. digging the hole to proper level and compressing the dirt tightly around the plant.

5 Water thoroughly, Dont let plants dry out and dont over water either. Weather is a factor here.

thats about it.
Reply:Figure out where you want to plant them and determine how much sun the area gets.

Go to your local garden center and ask for advice on what will best grow in your chosen spot.

Everything you need should be available there.
Reply:this is what i did and i am 14 and it turend out great!

kill a patch of grass

up the top layer of grass and throw it out

turn the soil over a couple times

plant some mums for color

then buy bulbs and lay them out then plant them

(do all that in the fall)

In the spring your bulbs will come out and cut the mums down
