Planting flowers in a fountain???

the house we bought has a large fountain that does not work. I like the fountain, so I was thinking of planting flowers in it instead? Would that work or would they most likely die ? HOw would I go about the right way?

thanks
Say

You can simulate "water" by having vinca minor..or major cascade over the edges maybe with "frothy" while alyssum, blue ageratum........oooh it could be pretty!
Reply:If the fountain still holds water, there are many marginal plants that need very moist soil, it may be a way for you to garden some types of plants you have never tried before.

edit:

fluffernut definitey has some good tips, especially about keeping the plants in pots. If there is little drainage, there are so many different plant varieties that like their "feet wet". You can set a good backdrop with something like iris and thalia and progress down through differnet sizes and blooming periods to make a great all season display..
Reply:Almost any plant that works in a hanging basket would work nicely. If it is a tier fountain, strawberries flowing over the sides into some short flower plants would look nice and taste good too. Have fun
Reply:The only problem I can see is drainage. Unless there is a way for excess water to drain out of the fountain, I would be leery about planting there.
Reply:if you can't get the fountain to work then fill it with dirt and plant flowers in it. It should be ok, will probably look very cute.White Teeth
